Is it possible to over-optimize a website? Definitely!

There will most likely be a penalty for this sites who tend to have great optimization and appear to rank too well for certain keywords.

The main contributor to over-optimization is to do with your keyword phrases and your title/H1 tags. If you use the exact same keyword phrase in its entirety with no other words in your title tag, H1 tags, anchor text, and HTML filename, it will trigger the penalty almost every time. This has been evident in numerous sites that may appear to do well, but in fact, in the background, they are literally committing suicide.

There are a few things you can do to be relatively certain that your site is well-optimized without being hit with an over-optimization penalty:

  1. Never use the same exact keyword phrase for the title tag and the heading tags on the page. Always add a couple of words to either to make them slightly different.
  2. When you use keywords for anchor text, make sure to vary the text occasionally. When a site has an unnaturally high number of pages all linking to it with the exact same keyword, it can throw up a huge red flag. Use your main phrase about half the time, and split the rest between two or three other phrases.
  3. Don’t use your main keyword phrase as your exact page title. If your main keyword phrase is “green widgets”, try a title like “Green Widgets for Sale”. Then you could use “Green Widgets” as the text in your page’s H1 tag.

So why is there an over-optimization penalty, anyway? Well, if you think about it, Google wants to display natural results. They don’t want to display pages that they believe are obviously attempting to manipulate the rankings, because these sites would be more likely to be spam. They feel that truly legitimate pages would rarely have “perfect” SEO. Note that I can place the most random HTML file on the Internet and that could become the next big thing without me even noticing it.

So sites can be penalized for over-optimization because those extremely well-optimized sites may seem “too perfect” to be a legitimate website. Its always good to mix things up and get your site noticed and ranked, but do it without manipulating the system through overusing your keywords and titles.

Is Duplicate Content a Myth?

Duplicate content is a major topic in the SEO world. Some people absolutely insist that your entire website can be penalized simply because you have a single article on your site that is also available elsewhere on the internet. Other people think that particular article would be penalized. And still others believe there is no penalty at all. So who’s right?

Google’s Matt Cutts has tried to clear up all the confusion around the duplicate content myth by posting a series of videos and blog posts about the topic. He has stated that there is no “duplicate content penalty”, but that a site may suffer issues with duplicate content simply because Google uses PageRank and other factors to determine which version of an article to show.

Look at it this way. Let’s say there are 20 different websites that have the exact same article on them. Google only wants one version of a particular article to show up, because users would quickly become irritated if they were shown the same content over and over. So how do they determine which version to show?

Generally, the page with the highest PageRank would be shown, while the other pages would not be. Sometimes two versions of the same article may show up on the first page, but this is fairly rare.
So what happens to the other pages? They are usually pushed far down in the rankings or sent into the “Supplemental Index”. Does that apply to the entire website? No! Each individual page on the website is looked at on its own merit unless Google has significant reason to believe the entire site is using blackhat methods. In this case, the entire site may be banned. But duplicate content is not generally considered blackhat!

Duplicate content is only regarded as blackhat or malicious if a single user takes the exact same content and uses it on multiple domains in an attempt to manipulate and dominate the listings in order to receive more than their fair share of traffic.

Simply posting a single article on your website is definitely not going to get your entire domain penalized. If it was that easy, your competitors could simply grab your content and make dozens of pages with it and get you banned!

So yes, there may be a minor penalty for using duplicate content in the form of it being difficult for that particular page to rank well, but your entire website isn’t going to suddenly disappear from the rankings simply because you post a few syndicated articles on it!

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of using techniques to help propel a website to the top of the search engine listings for certain keywords or keyword phrases.  These techniques have changed drastically over the years, and its very important to stay on top of the latest techniques.  Tactics that worked remarkably well a couple of years ago are now almost totally ineffective, and some of them may even result in your website being banned from the search engines entirely!

Fortunately, a few tactics are relatively timeless.  These tactics will probably still work just as well five years from now as they do today, and they won’t result in your website being banned, either.

First of all, let’s talk about the title tag.  The title tag is the most important element of a web page as far as SEO goes.  You must put relevant keywords into your title tag if you want to rank well for those keywords.

Don’t stuff keywords into the title tag.  Choose one or two important keywords or phrases, and then work those into your title naturally.  Make sure the title looks good and makes sense, because it is what will appear as clickable text in the search engine listings!

Heading tags are also very important.  Make sure you include your main keyword phrase in H1 tags on each page, but use them sparingly.  The overuse of heading tags can lead to penalties.  I recommend using no more than two heading tags per page, perhaps with your main keyword phrase in an H1 tag and a secondary phrase in an H2 tag.

You probably already know that it’s important to get links to your site from other web pages, but did you know that the text used to link to you is also very important?  It’s called anchor text, and its one thing many search engines put a lot of value on.

Whenever you get links to your site, try to make sure your keywords are used.  You shouldn’t use the exact same phrase for every single link, but use 3-4 variations, or 3-4 different keyword phrases, using your main keyword about half the time, and splitting the rest of the links between your other phrases.

There are many important aspects you should learn, but at long as you have these three crucial elements in place, you’ll already be on your way to a great SEO campaign.
